Silver-gilt Kiddush Cup, c. 1760-67

$6,000

Nuremberg, by Georg Andreas Brenner
Height: 4.5 in.; weight: 3 oz. 8 dwt.

SKU: 29X Category:

Octagonally faceted cup engraved with flowerheads and scrollwork on a round scalloped base. The rim inscribed in Hebrew.

The form of this cup is typical of mid-18th century German wine cups, and may well have been conceived as a secular piece. A Jewish customer would have requested the Hebrew engraving to convert the wine cup into a Kiddush cup. For obvious and tragic reasons, surviving German Judaica of the 18th century is extremely scarce.

Provenance:
Lempertz Auctions, 20 May 2022, lot 1121
